Wednesday, February 13th is Galentine’s Day, a Parks & Recreation spoof holiday-turned-real-thing. The idea is to go out with your girlfriends and celebrate how awesome you all are. While the fake holiday began in 2010, it has taken off as a real celebration for many women across the country in the past few years, and it’s one I think is well-deserved. So ladies, it’s time to put on those Sex and the City heels and paint the town pink!
More than just an opportunity to celebrate the special women in your life, Galentine’s Day is a much needed nod to the power of female friendship. Former Oregon Supreme Court Justice Betty Roberts, an activist and Evolutionary who was well ahead of her time, used to say that women need a “three-legged stool” – career, family & a female support network. Many women devote time and effort to their careers and their families, but forget to invest in building strong relationships with women that will serve as an important support system for their rest of their lives. Through kids, jobs, love, loss and illness, these women hold each other up and keep each other strong.
In her incredibly pioneering career, Justice Roberts never took for granted the friendships she forged with women in her life – referring to these relationships as a sanctuary to rest, recharge, and reflect. Betty’s message to women was to open our hearts and minds to each other and take a risk on investing in our mutual potential. When asked before her death if she was “ready to pass the torch”, she famously answered, “Pass the torch? Get your own torch! Let’s start a bonfire!”
On this day of “ladies celebrating ladies,” I encourage you to reach out to the Evolutionary women in your life and thank them for being warriors, mentors, friends and visionaries. Get together and start planning your next big move – take risks together, support each other, and believe in your ability to change the world!
To all my gal pals out there – Happy Galentine’s Day!
