Bank transfer day has been a long time coming. Sure, not all banks are bad news, but if you are looking for something more, something real, where should you take your business?
A credit union, of course! Because let’s face it, for most of us, our money is a lot more than just business. It’s our lives, our security, the happiness and development of our children. It’s everything.
Simon Sinek tells us that “People don’t choose your organization because of what you do. They choose it because of why you do it.” (if you haven’t seen it watch his TED speech at www.TED.com)
Here’s the thing about Credit Unions. They know Why.
This week I had the pleasure of working with Unitus Community Credit Union’s lending team. And they shared their reason for being in business. The Unitus CCU vision: “we care about people.” Nope, not just their members. Employees. Non-members. Children. “Occupy” protesters. Even ex-convicts. And they know that caring about these people helps make the world a better place.
But it’s not just Unitus CCU. Alabama Credit Union (ACU) was one of the first to assist people, handing out cash for basic necessities in the initial wake of the horrible destruction caused by the tornado in their hometown of Tuscaloosa when people had no access to accounts. And they are among the first financial institutions in the nation to explore a program for financial counseling for ex-convicts to assist them in becoming responsible, employed, financially healthy, tax paying members of the community.
Unitus CCU and ACU are only examples. Hundreds of credit unions across the country are doing the same heroic work. But it’s not for profit. It’s for people.
In Chapter 10 of our book Evolutionaries we talk about the Code of an Evolutionary. The code is: “Evolutionaries know Why.” The reason for being is devotion to a cause bigger than oneself. In this way, credit unions are Evolutionary. They not only have a reason Why, it’s the right Why.
On Bank Transfer Day moving (or not moving) your money is akin to casting your vote. Your vote matters.
